THE FRICTION

A migration file describes intended SQL, but the actual target schema may have drifted. Reviewers need to compare the states and understand what could be dropped or altered.

THE PRODUCT WE’RE EXPLORING

SchemaBrief, in three parts.

SchemaBrief would compare approved schema snapshots and prepare a readable change brief. Engineers would review the diff and its limitations before using their existing migration process.

Three planned capabilities we want to validate with early users.

01 / PLANNED

Compare actual schema states

Planned input support would start with PostgreSQL schema-only exports and identify additions, removals, and changed definitions.

02 / PLANNED

Surface destructive changes

Proposed review flags would call attention to dropped objects, changed nullability, and other changes that need an explicit decision.

03 / PLANNED

Keep the review record

Planned comments and approval notes would connect the inspected snapshots to the migration being reviewed.

AN INTENDED WORKFLOW

A clearer next step.
Less work around it.

A focused approach for small backend teams reviewing database migrations across development and production.

  1. 01

    Supply schema-only snapshots

A pilot would accept documented export formats without table rows or live database credentials.

  2. 02

    Review the change brief

Check detected differences and unsupported objects, then annotate the changes that need investigation.

  3. 03

    Approve in your workflow

Export the review record and use your own tested deployment process to apply any migration.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

Can I compare schemas now?

No. SchemaBrief is a research waitlist. Uploads, schema parsing, comparisons, and review records are not yet available.

Will it connect to or modify production?

The proposed first pilot would use schema-only exports and would not execute SQL. Database changes would remain in your existing migration process.

Will it prove a migration is safe?

No. A schema comparison cannot establish data compatibility, performance, or lock behavior by itself. Testing and engineering review would still be required.
